Cypriot Tripod Juglet, 1750 – 1700 BC

Great North Museum: Hancock, Tyne and Wear

Learning and Discovery

1946 To Today

This was the first object collected by Professor Brian Shefton of Newcastle University in 1956.

Brian’s collection of Greek archaeology is one of the most important in the country. Without his determination to establish Newcastle upon Tyne as a centre for the study of Greek archaeology, there would be no significant collection of Greek material in the region.

The Shefton Collection is used extensively, not only by academic researchers, but also by artists who want to understand the contribution of the Greek world to the western artistic tradition.

Collected by Brian Shefton (1919 – 2012)

On display at the Great North Museum: Hancock in the Explore! Gallery (Collecting and Collectors case), Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums
